Your Ideal Weight

Nutritionists, nutritional investigators and numerous national organizations use the Body Mass Index or BMI to determine proper weight assessment. Height and weight is used to calculate BMI. Generally, the higher your BMI number is, the greater your risk of developing diseases such as high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, and coronary artery disease. Additionally, waist sizes greater than 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women substantially increase the risk of developing health problems associated with being overweight or obese.

BMI is a reliable measurement of body fat and health risks associated with being overweight for most people between 19 and 70 years of age except women who are pregnant or breast feeding, competitive athletes, body builders, and chronically ill patients.

  • BMI of less than 20 -- very low body fat, seen in well conditioned athletes or seriously ill, cachectic individuals.

  •
  • BMI of 20-22 -- Ideal, healthy amount of fat, aesthetically attractive, lowest incidence of fat-related illnesses.

  •
  • BMI of 22-25 -- Acceptable range of body fat, but borderline to being at increased risk of health problems associated with being overweight.

  • BMI of 25-30 -- Overweight, some investigators call this category obese. There is an associated risk or increased early mortality and an increased incidence of certain illnesses.

  •
  • BMI of greater than 30 -- Morbidly obese, increased risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, gallbladder disease, heart disease, osteoarthritis, and certain cancers.

Of course, there are a number of factors that can increase the health risks associated with being overweight. Your doctor can give you better insight into additional risk factors that can affect your health.
