Quick Overview of Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are compounds comprised of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, and they are formed by plants as a product of photosynthesis.

Dietary carbohydrates are the principles and preferred source of energy for all bodily functions. Carbohydrates are sugars that are classified according to structure ie: simple, oligosaccharides (multiple sugars) and polysaccharides (complex molecules made up of simple sugars.)

Overindulgence of carbohydrates may result in nutritional deficiencies and obesity.

Fiber is listed in the category of carbohydrates. Dietary fiber is the residual undigested product of all palatable food after it has gone through the alimentary digestive processes.
