Homocysteine: What is it?

Recently, elevated blood levels of homocysteine have been identified as a causative agent and an independent risk factor for the development of arteriosclerotic vascular disease.

Homocysteine is an amino acid which normally occurs in the human body during the metabolism of methionine. The ordinary pathway of metabolism can only occur in the presence of the vitamins of B12, B6, and folic acid.

Without these essential co-factors, elevated levels of serum homocysteine occur which are harmful to human arteries.

For more information on homocysteine, read the section entitled "Homocysteine" in The Cardiac Surgeon's Diet and Health Design.
