Who Is The
Culprit of American Obesity?
   Volume 1, Issue 7
   August 2, 2001

The vibrating Boom! Boom! and the strange grunts and snorts that are so commonly heard today are not the sounds of dinosaurs plodding about. These are the sounds of the obese-amoths  of America walking to and fro and getting
in and out of "shrinking" chairs and seats and ever tightening jeans and trousers.

How many Americans can stand erect, then look down and actually see their feet? It is a surprisingly rapidly diminishing number of people that can  achieve this, since 60% of Americans are overweight and 25% are actually obese!

So, whose fault is this obesity epidemic?

Is it because the fast food chains and the American clothing manufacturers have conspired to serve larger, higher caloric portions of food in concert with making clothing sizes
larger than they were

previously made?

For Goodness' Sake!  It can't be our fault that we are fatter than ever and growing larger each day.

It can't be our responsibility to know what constitutes a balanced meal and what size portions we should eat.

We shouldn't be held accountable for the fact that we don't know which foods are carbohydrates nor that we don't know their effects on our bodies when we ingest them.

It shouldn't be our job to know which fats are important in a balanced diet and which fats are likely to be harmful to us.

We shouldn't be responsible for knowing which foods contain certain vitamins and minerals necessary for building and maintaining healthy bodies.

We shouldn't have to know if our current meal plans need to be changed or

supplemented with these important vitamins and minerals.

We shouldn't have to exercise vigorously on a regular basis to help prevent heart disease and osteoporosis and other serious sedentary and dietary related illnesses.

Even though we are overweight, we can "stick our heads in the sand" and ignore the fact that several serious disease entities are specifically related to the overweight/
obese health categories, including:

- High Blood Pressure
- Osteoarthritis
- Diabetes
- Heart Disease
- Gallbladder Disease                    - Certain Types of Cancer

These entities are diseases that "affect other people".

What happened to the trim, fit, well-nourished America?  Who is
accountable and responsible for its

passing? Surely, it isn't our fault as
individuals!

The fact that our health, vitality, and nutrition require us to be individually accountable and responsible speaks for itself as our slovenly bodies continue to increase in size.

It is not too late to make an individual commitment TODAY to become
responsible and accountable for your own health and nutrition.

Start today!

Initiate an exercise plan that you will stay  with on a regular basis and start this day to learn as much as you can about the foodstuffs you are eating and about their effects on your body.  After all, it is your life that is at stake.

Respectfully Yours,
BP Loughridge, MD
